| Wireless Mobile Broadband is the hottest ticket in the ISP market at the moment with over 13 ISPs now offering a mobile broadband service. Mobile broadband can be split into two categories, your standard monthly subscription plans for those that see this as a real alternative to a fixed ADSL and ADSL2 line and prepaid mobile broadband for those who don’t want to be tied down to a plan (and just want occassional usage). So who are the key providers and what do you need to get started? Telstra Mobile Broadband has the best coverage and the fastest speeds, they are also the most costly, although they are currently running half price broadband for the first year. The next key carrier is Optus. Most of the other providers in the mobile broadband race are using the Optus network. This includes, Virgin Mobile Broadband, Dodo Mobile Broadband, Internode, Westnet and Exetel. The 3rd carrier and provider is Vodafone who obviously use their own network and finally we have 3 Mobile Broadband. Its a very competitive market place. Gone Wireless provides you with a very simple breakdown of all the key plans, covering data allowances, terms, rates and excess fees. We do the research and you do the choosing. On the prepaid front, the market isn’t as competitive, but we still have some 10 key ISPs offering a solution. The best entry level providers include, Dodo,3 mobile, Virgin and Exetel. For volume usage, 3 Mobile Broadband and Unwired are probably the better solutions.
The concept of mobile broadband is really appealing, particularly for those that tend to work on the road, or for those who can’t get a fixed line solution and don’t want to rely upon satellite. In terms of performance, Telstra and 3 mobile are the better solutions, however 3 Mobile is really in metro offer, not for the country. For those not covered by 3 Mobile, anyone running the Optus network will give you reasonable reception without the Bigpond sting. You will need a USB stick or a sim card. Prices for this hardware is around $100 – $200 depending on the plan. I wouldn’t go second hand. Get a new stick with the warranty. I hope you enjoy Gone Wireless! |
