Pre-paid broadband
3G broadband is all the rage these days, all the major ISPs have an offering. No its getting even more exciting with Prepaid Wireless Braodband.
For 3G prepaid, you will need a good signal to get started. Unfortunately, like any broadband service, 3G is dependent on the strength of a decent signal for viable surfing speeds.
Telstra offers the best performance and coverage. It also is the most expensive. Significant investment has gone into upgrading networks and continues to. The other two key carriers/networks are Optus and Vodafone.
Plan Expiry
An important point to consider is the term that the data is available for. Most of the time this ranges from 30 to 60 days, and mirrors the popular pre-paid mobile plans. Some providers have gone to 12 months and many are now offering roll over option if you recharge prior to expiry.
Data caps
Like any broadband plan, pay attention to how much data you will need. Most of the cheaper pre-paid plans hover around 1 and 3Gbs – ideal if you want to browse the net, check emails and do light work online.
Dodo offer a different type of plan based on hours (similar to prepaid dialup plans). Might be worth checking the fine print as total data limits can apply. As an example, Dodo offers a total of 8GB a month total via their hours-based plan.
Do I need a modem?
Some plans come bundled with a 3G modem, while others come just with the SIM card. Prices start at about $100 and increase to $200 depending on the term of the plan.
