Some technologies are more than just gadgets.
Some technologies are clearly more than just fads in today;s fast changing environment. Here is an example of some of these.
Netbooks
Most are roughly the same size and weight as an average hardcover book and offer full-size keyboards, relatively large screens (often nine and 10 inches), run Windows XP and range in price from $400 to $1000. The first netbook was the Asus Eee PC but these days many companies, including Dell, Acer and HP, make them.
Cloud computing
The idea enables us to run applications and store files on the internet rather than our PCs.
It means we can access files wherever we are without having to transfer files or programs. An example is Google Docs, which allows you to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations that are stored online through your browser.
USB broadband modems
Wireless broadband access by inserting a USB stick into your PC, thanks to companies such as Optus, 3, Vodafone and Telstra. You might not be able to get the same speeds as fixed lines, but it certainly makes life easier for the traveller.
Wi-Fi
More and more devices require internet access, a Wi-Fi (wireless) broadband connection is rapidly a must have around the home or office.
Devices that use Wi-Fi include the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (via optional adaptor), iPhone, Chumby, internet radios and digital photo frames in addition to any extra desktop PCs and notebook computers you have.
Smartphones
Smartphones are increasingly becoming practical. We have all heard of the BlackBerry and the iPhone. The smartphone with the best keyboard is the HTC Touch Pro, although its touch screen can be fiddly, and the iPhone 3G is good for music lovers.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is for exchanging smaller amounts of information wirelessly over short distances – but like Wi-Fi, the applications for it are growing and it’s becoming indispensable.
